THE first thing visible as you approach Kerry artist Pauline Bewick’s exhibition in Cork is a striking banner adorning the front of a brand-new glass and stone building on Lavitt’s Quay.
It reads simply: “Bewick”, in her familiar signature, and hints at the bold new collection contained within.
The exhibition features all new work in an exciting mix of mediums. Vibrant paintings, pastels, hand-woven tapestries and carpets hang in striking contrast to the immense white space given over to house her work.
Also featured are ceramic and sculpture along with a fascinating display of dozens of her sketchbooks strewn about on a long table, opened to pages illustrating her many travels and inspirations.
Pauline Bewick’s ‘Cork Woman’ exhibition is named after the unusual feature piece - a 12 foot sculpture of a woman in front of Cork’s landmark Shandon Bells, constructed entirely out of different types of cork.
The hundreds of wine corks used in the sculpture were saved for Bewick by local restaurants, family and friends, and she is quick to point out that they were not all hers.
The Pauline Bewick Cork Woman exhibition is located on the ground floor of the new O’Callaghan Properties building at 21 Lavitt’s Quay in Cork City.
It will continue until June 4 and it is well worth the trip to Cork.
