Essential services are not luxuries

THOSE in attendance at a recent fashion show in the Killarney Avenue Hotel, which was organised by Kerry Parents and Friends organisation, were undoubtedly highly entertained by the talented and spirited models in the packed function room.

The models in question are trainees of the community project and rehabilitative training unit in the Park Court Centre in Beech Road, Killarney which is run by the association.

Trainees who complete this course graduate with essential life skills which enable them to avail of work placements and other opportunities which allow them to advance and integrate more effectively within their respective communities.

The disability strategy outlined by the government in 2004 was widely commended at the time as a positive action measure designed to support the provision of disability specific services to those with special needs. It was also designed to improve access to mainstream public services for these individuals.

However, recent government cuts have resulted in the disability strategy effectively being dismantled and people with disabilities have faced severe cuts in the services they receive, including education supports and social welfare.

Little if any respite services are available to parents of children with disabilities and when these services are available, they are offered on an emergency basis only.

In general, cuts in this sector have also ensured that the day-to-day running of support services has been adversely impacted in recent times.

The majority of individuals so negatively impacted by these cuts are not in a position to speak up for themselves. However, the government must realise that services provided to individuals with special needs and their families are not luxuries that may be slashed – they are essential and integral parts of the health, education and well being of this sector of our society.

People with special needs deserve adequate and equal care to that of any other individual in this state.
