Farmers unite to oppose talks
FARMING organisations north and south of the border are to work together to oppose the Mercusor trade talks, which they claim will have a devastating impact on the agricultural sector across the island of Ireland.
Mercusor is a regional trade agreement between Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay founded in 1991. Trade talks between the EU Commission and the Mercosur trading bloc talks opened in Argentine capital, Buenos Aries, and are expected to last for up to a year.
IFA President, John Bryan, and the newly-elected President of the Ulster Farmers Union (UFU), John Thompson, said the talks would have a devastating effect on livestock, pig, poultry and grain sectors on both sides of the border.
The two leaders held a bi-lateral meeting during a visit by a UFU delegation to the Irish Farm Centre, where a review of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and animal health issues were discussed.
Both men pledged to secure a properly funded CAP that continues to support active farmers post2013.
