Lowry ready for defence of Open title in Killarney
REIGNING 3 Irish Open champion Shane Lowry will not give up his coveted title without a fight in Killarney this week.
After months of waiting, the biggest event in the Irish sporting calendar has finally arrived at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club as it plays host to the 3 Irish Open.
World-renowned golfers such as Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy will be teeing off in Killarney this week, all vying for the crown of champion.
But Shane Lowry, who won the event as an amateur in Baltray last year, is not ready to relinquish his title.
"Being the 3 Irish Open champion has changed my life and the fact that I have had 16 months to enjoy it has been a nice bonus," Lowry said ahead of the big event in Killarney.
"I have been able to milk it for as long as possible but I want to do it again. I wouldn’t mind another 12 months at it and who knows, I am playing well at the moment and if things go my way again then you never know.
"It would be unbelievable to defend it and get another 10,000 people onto the 18th green on the Sunday night to join the celebrations," said Lowry.
Lowry is also confident that Killarney Golf Club will prove to be an inspired choice as the host venue for the biggest golf tournament in Ireland.
"I can’t wait for the 3 Irish Open. It’s going to be a great event this year with that location and the date on the bank holiday weekend," Lowry said.
"We should have great crowds and I know that a lot of the crowd will be the guys from Offaly coming down to support me and that will be special."
To help with access to the Open, Iarnród Éireann has introduced a €10 day return fare from any station in Cork or Kerry to Killarney for the four days of the event.
In addition, a shuttle bus will run between Killarney train station and the course for golf fans arriving off the trains from around the county and country.
