Lee Strand 550 final set to be a thriller
A COUPLE of weeks ago, the names of two greyhounds, Canary Dave and Nicken Shaw, were on everybodys’ lips as the two that would be involved when the final six go to traps this Friday night in the Lee Strand 550 final.
Amazingly, both are now out of the sweep and the final has a very open look about it, after the semi-finals on Friday night.
The Killarney-owned Canary Dave was muscled out at the quarter-final stage while Nicken Shaw, who had won his quarterfinal by 15 lengths, had to withdraw before the semifinal due to sickness.
This allowed Kiln Kylie to come in his place but the race was robbed of one of its principal stars.
The first semi-final looked to be between Shaneboy Sport, Kiln Kylie and Green Flash. And they were the three who qualified for the final, though maybe not in the order that punters thought.
Da Dancer displayed the best early pace and led at the opening bend before being squeezed up, thus allowing Shaneboy Sport up her inside and that ultimately decided the race.
Green Flash had displayed a lot of early pace and was running very wide, looking to be a real threat to the leader as Kiln Kylie made headway after a slow enough start.
Shaneboy Sport was not stopping in front as Green Flash had every chance on the outside but he began to thread water.
This allowed Shaneboy Sport to maintain his advantage all the way down the home straight and he had a length and half to spare over Kiln Kylie on the line, winning in a quick 30.13, for the Kiely’s from Kilmallock. The winner is a classy sort but got a poor draw out in trap five in the final.
The second semi-final had a very open look about it, with Paul Hennessy having two runners in the lineup – Priceless Palm, who was not fancied out of trap one, and Square Bar from trap five, who was sent off as favourite with White Coat also attracting support.
Blue Social flew from trap six but could not maintain his run, and instead it was White Coat who took it up. But again having led all the way into the home straight, he then failed to go on and claim the race.
Instead, Square Bar and Lengthy Lee appeared the most likely to win as White Coat faltered but few spotted Priceless Palm finishing like the proverbial train on the rails, as she flew home.
Unbelievably, Priceless Palm got home by three quarters of a length in 30.29, with Lengthy Lee and Square Bar all making the final.
The winner is owned by Kathleen Murphy from the Caymen Islands and trained by Paul Hennessy.
The draw for the Lee Strand 550 final on this Friday night is as follows: Trap One: Lengthy Lee Trap Two: Kiln Kylie Trap Three: Priceless Palm Trap Four: Square Bar Trap Five: Shaneboy Sport Trap Six: Green Flash (W) Also, there were three semi-finals of this A1 570 sweepstake.
The Thomas Kearney-owned and trained Millabbey Peejay looked very impressive when he took it up at the opening bend and raced right away from his rivals to record a four and half lengths success from Killahas Hannah in 31.15.
Millabbey Peejay looks progressive as he has good early pace and this was his fourth win from five outings.
The first semi-final was an incident-packed affair with major traffic problems at the opening bend, and it was Law Writ who came off the worst.
King of Lispole managed to escape lightly enough and she took it up at the second bend to lead the rest of the way home. She was three and half lengths clear on the line from Rathanny Billy, in 31.62, winning for Robert Hickson from Lispole.
The third semi-final produced a trap-to-line winner when Bridge Lord got away to a flyer from trap three. He was always in control as he strolled to a length and half win over the running on Headley’s Frisky in 31.23 for Donal G O’Mahony from Millstreet.
