Dilemma has his young owners Beaming after win
By Murt Murphy
A BUMPER crowd was treated to a thrilling Paddy O’Sullivan Race of Champions final at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium, Tralee, on Friday night as Kerry GAA went to the dogs to raise an estimated €100,000 for the Kerry senior football and senior hurling teams’ training fund.
It was a night of pure theatre as some of the top greyhounds in the country raced for top prize-money, with over €40,000 being claimed on the night.
The big race of the night was the Paddy O’Sullivan Race of Champions, sponsored by the Lynch family, and it certainly did not disappoint.
It produced a thrilling finish and a surprise result with the two fancied runners, Tullymurry Act and Colourful Champ, being turned over.
It was a race that was decided on the break with Beaming Dilemma bombing out of trap one with Sevenheads Bay and Colourful Champ also well away.
But the 2/1 favourite Tullymurry Act missed the kick and would require a lot of luck to get to the front from being only fifth at the opening bend.
Meanwhile, Beaming Dilemma, the Cork Guinness Trophy winner, was really motoring well at the head of the field and reached half way in a very quick 14.27.
Sevenheads Bay was troubling the leader with Tullymurry Act, having battled his way through traffic to be in the slipstream of the leading pair but it was going to be a big ask for the favourite.
Beaming Dilemma still held the call around the final two bends but Sevenheads Bay was putting it up to the leader as the two were locked in a mighty battle as they headed down the finishing straight, to a mighty roar from the massive crowd.
Beaming Dilemma was just in front as they hit the winning line but Sevenheads Bay with one last lunge saw both past together.
It took the judge a few minutes to separate the two protagonists with Beaming Dilemma getting the verdict by the shortest of short heads in 29.66, which is less than a length off the track record.
It was a great finish to a great race with Beaming Dilemma being jointly owned by two six-year-olds Joshua Ryan and Cillian O’Brien from Knocklong, Co Limerick, and trained by Pat Buckley from Cappawhite.
This was a high-class event and full marks to Liam Lynch and Lynch family, and the chief organiser Seán Flaherty can feel justifiably proud of a job well done.
It was quality all the way in the supporting card with College Causeway/Killahan Phanter@Stud final afforded Cashen Zig the former Laurels winner to collect some more valuable prize-money.
He blazed a trail from trap two with the favourite Rafa Baby staying very wide, he never got in a serious blow.
Cashen Zig has clearly lost none of his old sparkle as he led all the way and staying on well he won by a length and half in 28.77 for owner/trainer Chris Houlihan from Ballyduff.
Remember around this time last year Cashen Zig broke the hurdles track record.
In fact, earlier in the evening Houlihan looked as if his Cashen Jason might lead all the way in the Denis and Joan Brosnan Sweepstake final but he was collared on the finishing straight by the favourite Buffy’s Girl in 29.00 who is owned by Philip Regan from Abbeydorney.
The best wine was kept until last though when the Patsy Byrne owned Ballymac Under took over from Skidroe Joe half way down the back, and then he proceeded to race right away from his rivals to win by three and half lengths in a sensational 28.45. This was some training feat by Pa Fitzgerald.
Mike McKenna won the second race when he took it up at the second bend and had too much pace for his rivals as he stayed on strongly to beat Queenwood Tagg in a very smart 28.86.
Patrick H O’Connor rarely lets a big night go without a winner and he took the opener with Gold Joy, winning by a length in 29.58 in a rough enough race. The winner is owned by Eric and Sinead O’Connor from Tarbert.
