Queen’s visit is to be welcomed
THE first mention of a proposed visit by Queen Elizabeth to Ireland appeared on the front page of The Kingdom several weeks ago when it was portrayed, correctly, as a wonderful opportunity to help save the tourism industry in what is a very difficult trading year.
There was no response from the government to the clever kite flown by The Kingdom and the Kerry tourism industry.
Some weeks later the proposed visit by Queen Elizabeth was back on the front page of The Kingdom when hardline republicans were quoted as saying that they would oppose the royal visit at all costs and, in doing so, they made a laughing stock of themselves by showing precious little knowledge of current day events in what is a very changed country.
Even then, there was no response from the government on the proposed visit. Now, it seems, a royal visit is very much on the cards following confirmation that an invitation is to be extended to Queen Elizabeth II before the reign of President Mary McAleese comes to a close.
At last, it seems, the government has been alerted to the sheer potential such a visit would have in terms of promoting Ireland throughout the UK where the Queen is held in very high esteem.
Where the head of the royal family goes, her people regularly follow.
Well done to all involved in Kerry tourism for setting the ball rolling and well done to The Kingdom for kicking it into a public arena.
We must all work hard to ensure it happens and ensure she gets a wonderful céad meile fáilte she accepts the invitation.
