Veronica and Dáithí are hot with bookies
BY MARY MURPHY

KERRY Rose Veronica Hunt has been quoted at odds of 9/1 to claim the overall 2010 Rose of Tralee title and she is the early second favourite behind Leitrim Rose Martha Gilheany at 8/1.

Also in the running, according to the bookies, are Tipperary Rose, Lynda Kelly; Carlow Rose, Jessica Adamson; Down Rose, Gemma Murphy and Cork Rose, Laura Mitchell who are all on odds of 10/1 with Paddy Power.

With the pageant being hosted for the first time by Kerry celebrity Dáithí Ó Sé, his wacky sense of humour has the punters being offered some unusual bets, including 5/1 that he will appear on stage in his trademark cowboy boots.

Paddy Powers is offering odds of 4/1 on the TG4 weatherman hooking up with one of this year’s contestants and punters can also speculate on what colour tuxedo the adventurous Dáithí will don on the night.

Its 1/5 that he opts for traditional black and 8/1 that he dons a blue or orange suit.

Other bets of note are on Dáithí doing a jig with one of the roses (9/4); singing on stage (8/1), accidentally ripping one of the Roses’ dresses (33/1) and on a note of pure romance, that bachelor Daithí ends up marrying one of the ladies (20/1).

"It’s impossible at this point to pick a winner from the list of Roses but if there’s one thing we can be sure of it’s that Dáithí will be the main attraction," said Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power.

"So far punters are more concerned with how Dáithí does on the night and what he’ll wear than who is actually going to win. I think it’s fair to say he has taken centre stage already," she added.

Paddy Power is also betting on how long Dáithí will stay on as host of the popular pageant. The odds on him outlasting previous host Ray D’Arcy and staying in the Dome for over five years are just 4/1.

Meanwhile, festival bosses have revealed the entertainment line-up for this year’s Rose Ball which will see a new 10-piece big band, Brass & Co, who are experienced in swing, disco, Motown and rock and roll.

"The International Rose Ball continues to be the highlight of the year for many people and once again there will be a spectacular night of entertainment on show," said festival managing director, Anthony O’Gara said.
