Kerry to host the top brains

TOP level entrepreneurs and educators, bankers and business students have been urged to visit Kerry this September for what is being billed as one of the business events of the year.

Entrepreneurs and Economists: Consensus or Conflict? is the theme of the Richard Cantillon School seminar which is being held in memory of the legendary Ballyheigue banker and trader of the 17th century who was recognised internationally as a brilliant intellectual and the founding father of modern economics.

The star line-up of speakers at the three-day event includes NAMA chief Brendan McDonagh, economists Colm McCarthy, Brian Lucey, and Antoin E Murphy, former Tanaiste Dick Spring and journalist and broadcaster Vincent Browne.

Jointly run by the Kerry County Enterprise Board and the North and East Kerry Development Partnership, the Richard Cantillon School will take place in Tralee from September 8-10 and it seeks to provide a forum, whereby anyone with an interest in business will have a unique opportunity to exchange ideas with some of the top names in economic planning and business development.

Delegates can choose from a wide-range of topical, panel discussions over the three-day programme and discuss possible solutions for the country's economic crisis with the experts present.

Topics listed for discussion include the need for entrepreneurial thinking in the public sector, social entrepreneurship and teaching entrepreneurship.

A tour to Cantillon heritage sites in North Kerry and a gala dinner will facilitate more informal interaction between the speakers and delegates during the two evenings of the programme.

The outcomes of the panel discussions will provide the basis of a white paper, which will be presented to the government after the event.

The Richard Cantillon School was established to celebrate the Kerry man who spent his adult life in England and France, where he gained vast experience and wealth as a skilled banker and trader.

He was also a brilliant intellectual and is acknowledged as the first economist to have developed insights into the role of entrepreneurship.
