Garvey on Q-mark shortlist for safety and hygiene award
KERRY retailers, the Garvey Group, has been nominated for a prestigious hygiene and food safety award.
The Garvey group, which operates eight SuperValu and two Centra supermarkets, has been nominated in the group retailer hygiene and food safety category of the Q-mark awards, which are presented each year to companies who achieve the highest standards of quality and excellence, with criteria ensuring that clients exceed legal requirements rather than simply adhering to them.
This assures consumers that companies such as the Garvey Group are committed to continuous improvement and best practice, Irene Collins, managing director with the Excellence Ireland Quality Association, said to be nominated for the Q-mark award is an enormous achievement, particularly as this year has seen the highest number of entries in the history of the event.
"Companies who hold the mark demonstrate to their customers that the highest standards of quality and excellence are at the heart of their business and that is something that is really worth celebrating. I wish Garey Group the best of luck," Ms Collins said.
The Garvey group was established in the late 1960s in Dingle. Founded by Tomas Garvey, the company initially started out as a drapery store. It soon became the first self-service supermarket in Kerry and in the mid-1990s expanded into Newcastlewest and Dungarvan.
In total the group today has eight SuperValu stores and two Centra outlets and is as committed today as it was 40 years ago to ensuring that food hygiene remains a priority.
The EIQA offers it programmes across all sectors, with customers in retail, food service, manufacturing, institutions, prison services, government, healthcare, business and professional services, financial institutions, nursing homes, leisure centres and not for profit organisations.
