Kelly should steer well clear of park
BY DONAL HICKEY

SOMEBODY in political circles is playing dirty tricks with Fine Gael in Kerry South.

All the main political parties have denied that they are behind an opinion poll which has been carried out in the constituency.

Fine Gael TD Tom Sheahan appears to be the target, moreover when MEP Seán Kelly is included as a candidate alongside him.

This stunt has all the hallmarks of an inside FG job, without official sanction.

The Blue Shirts in Kerry South are not as united as they say they are and among them are a few mischief-makers who are well capable of stirring things up.

There’s no way Kelly will be on the ticket in the next general election because he’s committed to the European Parliament for five years. Cllr Brendan Griffin is the most likely running mate for Tom.

In any event, Kelly probably has bigger things in mind.

In the letters column of this newspaper, last week, Alan Whelan, from Beaufort, suggested Kelly as a candidate for the presidency – a view that has been gathering momentum.

Paddy Power is currently quoting the Kilcummin man at odds of 10/1 for the presidency, about fourth behind the 5/2 favourite, Senator David Norris.

Kelly would make a fine president but he would be wasted in that big rambling house in the Phoenix Park. But he has plenty of other things to achieve, without even considering a run for the presidency.

He has, for instance, yet to make his mark in Brussels while, long-term, he cannot be ruled out of a key role in Irish politics. Would he not make an excellent Minister for Sport and Tourism?

Kelly is still on the right side 60 and can achieve much more in the political arena, but he would be unlikely to aim for anything less that a ministerial position in domestic politics.

His closeness to FG leader Enda Kenny has become apparent in recent times and, as they say in Sliabh Luachra, that’s no black eye to him.

Kenny spends some of his summer holidays in Kerry and will probably be having a tete-a-tete with Kelly in the next few weeks – just a friendly chat about how things are going in the party.

But, for heaven’s sake, Seán, keep well away from that auld house in the park. Stick with the real politics and you might even become Fine Gael leader, or Taoiseach, some day.
