Penneys from heaven for shoppers
BY MARY MURPHY

HUNDREDS of eager shoppers gathered outside the new Penneys store in Killarney on Thursday morning for the gala opening of the company’s flagship premises.

The new store employs 115 people, including 26 staff who transferred from its old Killarney store, and it was a case of all hands on deck as the doors opened just after 9am, much to the delight of shoppers.

In the region of 200 excited shoppers had gathered outside the store from early morning and the first sales were already buzzing through the cash registers by quarter past nine.

The massive new store on High Street measures 31,500 square feet and is a staggering six times the size of the old Penneys which opened in Killarney 32 years ago.

Primark director Breege O’Donoghue remarked: "Our first store opened in Killarney in May 1978 and I delighted to be back to open this store which is six times the size of the original.

She added: "In terms of size this new store is in the top ten in Ireland but it’s our best and most beautiful store and reinforces the new modern Penneys brand," she added.

Construction work took a total of eight months and fitting out a further eight weeks, with between 100 and 150 people working on site over the last two months to get the store ready to open.

"I would like to welcome our 89 new employees and, of course, the 26 employees who transferred from the old store for they are part of the reason we are here today," Ms O’Donoghue remarked.

"Many have long service and, in particular, I would like to mention Margaret Cronin-Roberts and Kay O’Connor who have 49 years of service between them," she added.

The ribbon at the official opening in Killarney was cut by Aidan Shields, chief financial officer with Primark.
